Vaccination patterns, disparities, and policy among Asian-Americans and Asians living in the USA

Published in The Lancet Global Health, 2022

In this conference proceeding, we examined National Health Interview Survey (NHIS) data from 2015–18 to analyse the vaccination patterns, factors, and trends of Chinese, Asian Indian, Filipino, other Asian, and non-Hispanic White adults (n=253,626) for seven vaccines recommended by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Precision Sleep Medicine: Variations in Sleep Quality Among Asian Americans in the National Health Interview Survey (2006-2018)

Published in Online Abstract Issue of the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine, 2022

In this conference proceeding, we examined National Health Interview Survey (NHIS) data from 2006–2018 to analyse the sleep patterns, factors, and trends of Chinese, Asian Indian, Filipino, other Asian, and non-Hispanic White adults (n=880,210).

Disparities and Trends in Routine Adult Vaccination Rates Among Disaggregated Asian American Subgroups, National Health Interview Survey 2006–2018

Published in AJPM Focus, 2023

In this paper, we examined National Health Interview Survey (NHIS) data from 2015–18 to analyse the vaccination patterns, factors, and trends of Chinese, Asian Indian, Filipino, other Asian, and non-Hispanic White adults (n=253,626) for seven vaccines recommended by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. We found that Asian Americans have lower rates of some routine vaccines than non-Hispanic Whites, foreign-born Asian Americans have lower vaccination rates than their U.S.-born counterparts, and vaccination rates and trends vary significantly among Asian subgroups. Thus, culturally-targeted public health interventions may improve vaccination rates.

Acoustically-Targeted Measurement of Transgene Expression in the Brain

Published in bioRxiv, 2023

Gene expression is a critical component of brain physiology and activity, but monitoring this expression in the living brain represents a significant challenge. Here, we introduce a new paradigm called Recovery of Markers through InSonation (REMIS) for noninvasive measurement of gene expression in the brain with cell-type, spatial, and temporal specificity.

Towards Precision Sleep Medicine: Variations in Sleep Quality Among Disaggregated Asian Americans in the National Health Interview Survey (2006-2018)

Published in Journal of Clinical Sleep Medicine, 2023

In this paper, we examined National Health Interview Survey (NHIS) data from 2006–2018 to analyse the sleep patterns, factors, and trends of Chinese, Asian Indian, Filipino, other Asian, and non-Hispanic White adults (n=880,210). We found that Filipinos had the worst sleep outcomes, while Asian Indians had significantly better sleep outcomes. All Asian subgroups were less likely to report using sleep medications than NHWs. Foreign-born status had a negative association with sufficient sleep duration in Filipinos but a positive association in Asian Indians and Chinese. These findings highlight the importance of disaggregating Asian ethnic subgroups to address their health needs.

Noninvasive Multiplexed Neuromodulation via Acoustically Targeted Chemogenetics

Research work at Rice University with the Szablowski Lab for Noninvasive Neuroengineering, Feb 2022 to present

We are designing Acoustically Targeted Chemogenetics to target and modulate multiple sites of the brain independently. If successful, we could independently modulate different nodes of neural networks to treat complex disorders.

Designing Decoders for Brain-Computer Interfaces

Research work at University of Washington Center for Neurotechnology with the Orsborn Lab, May 2023 to present

I am developing a novel neural decoder paradigm for Brain-Computer Interfaces (BCIs) that could expand their practicality and accessibility.

Noninvasive monitoring of gene expression in the brain

Research work at Rice University with the Szablowski Lab for Noninvasive Neuroengineering, Jan 2023 to May 2023

Using synthetic markers of gene expression and focused ultrasound for blood-brain barrier opening (FUS-BBBO), we successfully developed a precise, sensitive, noninvasive paradigm for monitoring gene expression in the brain called Recovery of Markers through InSonation (REMIS).

Variations in Sleep Outcomes Among Disaggregated Asian Americans

Research work at Stanford University School of Medicine with the Center for Asian Health Research and Education (CARE), April 2021 to July 2023

Asian Americans (AAs) report higher rates of insufficient sleep than other groups nationally. It is unclear how sleep outcomes differ among disaggregated Asian subgroups. The National Health Interview Survey was used to analyze self-reported sleep quality and duration measures for AA subgroups to inform policies and future research. Filipinos report poor sleep outcomes and Asian Indians report significantly better sleep outcomes, highlighting the importance of disaggregating Asians.

Disparities and Trends in Adult Vaccination Rates Among Asian Americans

Research work at Stanford University School of Medicine with the Center for Asian Health Research and Education (CARE), April 2021 to July 2023

Little is known about vaccination rates among disaggregated Asian-American (AA) subgroups. Using the National Health Interview Survey, we analyzed recent vaccination rates (2015-2018, n=188,250) and trends (2006-2018) among Chinese, Asian Indian, Filipino, other Asian, and non-Hispanic White (NHW) adults for six vaccines (Human Papillomavirus, hepatitis B, pneumococcal, influenza, tetanus-diphtheria, and shingles vaccines). This project aimed to help inform policies aimed at increasing vaccine uptake. Foreign-born AAs have lower vaccination rates than US-born AAs. AAs have lower rates in some vaccines than NHW.

Calibrating Stereotaxic Coordinates via Fringe Projection Profilometry

Research work at Rice University with the Szablowski Lab for Noninvasive Neuroengineering, Jan 2021 to March 2022

Using fringe projection profilometry (FPP), a computer vision technique based on structured illumination, I took on a project improving the calibraiton process of Focused Ultrasound (FUS).
