6 avenues to do summer research:

  1. NSF-REU (All STEM disciplines) (very selective) https://www.nsf.gov/crssprgm/reu/reu_search.jsp

  2. Amgen/NIH funded programs (Biology/medical focus) (very selective) https://www.training.nih.gov/research-training/pb/ https://amgenscholars.com/
  3. University-funded programs (e.g. SURF, etc) (any topic) (varying selectivity): Search for “(university) SURF”, “(university) (discipline) summer research,” etc. Examples: Caltech SURF: https://sfp.caltech.edu/undergraduate-research/programs/surf MIT MSRP: https://oge.mit.edu/msrp/ Scripps SURF: https://education.scripps.edu/undergraduate/summer-research/surf-program/index.html Princeton SIP: https://pni.princeton.edu/apply/undergraduate-summer-interns Sometimes, you might find a large discipline-specific database that can help you find these programs (example: https://people.rit.edu/gtfsbi/Symp/Neuroscience.htm). Even if they are outdated, it can help to learn the terms and program names to search for. Because they are harder to find, they may be less selective. You might also find research institutes specific to your discipline which are well-known/reputable in your field but may be not as well known among undergraduates and thus receive fewer applicants. Talk to someone in the field for this. (see the Industry/nonprofit section)

  4. Government research programs (Typically STEM-related): Examples: https://www.lanl.gov/careers/career-options/student-internships/undergraduate/index.php DOE: https://science.osti.gov/wdts/suli
  5. Industry/nonprofit (e.g. Janelia, Allen, Salk): The ones below are very reputable in Neuroscience, even though they are not university-based programs. There may be analogous programs in your discipline. examples: Janelia https://www.janelia.org/you-janelia/students-postdocs/undergraduate-scholars-program Allen institute https://alleninstitute.org/careers/internships-and-postbac/#interns-postbac-listing Salk SURF: https://www.salk.edu/about/diversity-equity-inclusion/summer-research-opportunities/
  6. Cold email a professor/continue research with a professor

How many to apply to: approximately 10, range of perceived popularities (note: perceived popularity is closely tied to reputation, but there are reputable programs that are lesser known among undergrads)

Could consider adding RUSP, Goldwater, bosterbio, sigma xi GIAR to future research funding, or could create a separate doc for that.
